CORIZON HEALTH MUSIC THERAPY AMBASSADOR TO PERFORM AT KDOC REENTRY CELEBRATIONS

BRENTWOOD, TN (July 12, 2017) – Corizon Health is pleased to support the State of Kansas’s Reentry Week 2017 with special performances on Thursday and Friday by country music veteran and actor Mark Collie, the company’s Music Therapy Ambassador.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback proclaimed July 10 – 14, 2017, Reentry Week, to highlight the evidence-based work done by staff, contract providers, volunteers, mentors, and community partners, which has led to a reduction in recidivism (returns to prison) from more than 55 percent to 35 percent.

Corizon Health, the nation’s leading provider of correctional healthcare, has partnered with the Kansas Department of Corrections for a total of 18 years to provide physical and behavioral health services to those incarcerated in the state’s prisons.

In May, Corizon Health CEO Karey Witty announced the appointment of Collie as the company’s Music Therapy Ambassador after learning of his 15-year journey to share stories and songs inside the walls ofTennessee’s Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, chronicled in the documentary film The Mountain.

Collie currently is participating in a pilot program launched in June within the Tennessee Department of Correction to incorporate music and songwriting into therapy groups. Corizon expects to expand this program to other correctional contracts throughout the country.

“It is clear that Mark’s drive and passion will provide relief to our patient base,” Witty said. “We tend to think of medicine as high tech, and Corizon certainly has a number of innovative technical solutions to improve the delivery of correctional healthcare like telehealth and electronic medical records, but often it is the low-tech approaches like music, art, mentoring, and caring that really turns lives around.”

Collie’s performance on the evening of Thursday, July 13, 2017, will begin at 6:30 p.m. and include remarks by Gov. Brownback, Corrections Secretary Joe Norwood, and a testimonial by a rehabilitated offender and his mentor.

On Friday, July 14, 2017, Collie will participate in a celebration at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility where he will perform for inmates, followed by a tour of the prison with the Gov. Brownback and Sec. Norwood.

Media wishing to attend either event should contact the KDOC Communications Office at todd.fertig@ks.gov or 785-296-5695

Mark Collie has been entertaining country music fans since he burst onto the scene in the 90s with his honky-tonk-meets-rockabilly style. With seven major label albums and 16 songs on the “Hot Country Songs” chart to his name, Collie also has penned songs for Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Aaron Tippin, George Jones, and Alabama to name a few, and starred as Frankie Gray on the hit TV series Nashville.
